Highly skilled migrants do not need a job offer but are required to pass a points- based assessment under Tier 1 of the UK Border Agency’s Points Based System.

There are currently four immigration categories for highly skilled workers:
Highly Skilled Workers- Tier 1 (General)
Highly skilled workers applying for leave to remain in the UK under Tier 1 (General) will be awarded points based on qualifications, previous earnings, UK experience, age, English language skills and available financial maintenance.
Applicants must also demonstrate that their skills are sufficient to meet to strict requirements of the UK Border Agency.
Entrepreneurs- Tier 1 (Entrepreneur)
Entrepreneurs applying for leave to remain in the UK under Tier 1 (Entrepreneur) will have to demonstrate their eligibility to the UK Border Agency. Entrepreneurs will also have to pass a points based assessment.
This category is for those being actively involved in investment and the running of businesses in the UK.
Investors- Tier 1 (Investor)
High net worth individuals wishing to invest in the UK also have to pass a points based assessment under the Tier 1 (Investor) category.
Those applying must provide evidence that they intend to invest at least £1,000,000 in the UK.
Post- study workers
After graduating, students may apply to stay in the UK to work. This falls under the Tier 1 (post- study workers) category. Applicants must pass a points based assessment.
Leave to remain will be issued for 2 years and cannot be extended. After this applicants can apply for further leave to remain under another tier in the points-based system.
