Immigration Summary

The Residence Visa for Local Hires is the standard immigration route for foreign nationals locally hired in Peru for at least twelve months.

The Residence Visa for Assignees is the standard immigration route for foreign national assignees who will remain on home country contract and payroll and be assigned to the Peruvian entity for at least twelve months.

Applications for both categories of residence visa can be issued at a Peruvian consulate abroad, or a post-arrival application for change of status from visitor to residence can be submitted.

The Temporary Visa for Assignees is applicable to foreign nationals who will be in Peru for up to a maximum of twelve months. This process requires the assignee to remain on home country contract and payroll. The sending entity should be linked to the Peruvian entity by common ownership or by a contract for services.

Nationals of a member or associate member country of MERCOSUR (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay and Uruguay) do not require work authorisation to take up employment in Peru, but are required to apply for a MERCOSUR Residence Visa. Application for the visa must be made post-arrival in Peru as a change of status from visitor to MERCOSUR temporary residence permit holder. Please note that there is a similar process for Argentinians as per a bilateral agreement between Argentina and Peru.

Business visitors entering the country without the purpose of residence, with only the intention to conduct legal business negotiations or similar are permitted to sign contracts or transactions. They cannot perform gainful activities or receive payment in Peru, except in the case of deeds as director of companies domiciled in Peru or fees as lecturers or international consultants under a service contract that does not exceed thirty calendar days within any period of twelve months.
